Badgers’ dinner – Arms and the young woman

This year saw a select subset of the playing strength of the club along with their other halves and a scattering of offspring gather in the back room of The Kingswood Arms to celebrate another successful season littered with milestones of one kind or another. The awards part of the evening was also attended by Amy, away in Loughborough at an England training camp, via Facetime. For the record, the trophies and mementos found their way to:

BattingAmy Gordon213 runs @ 53.3
BowlingBill Jenkins28 wickets @ 9.8
FieldingJake Gordon20 catches
CaptainsRob Knew
Frank ButtDarrell Pitts(for his maiden ton)
‘Wang Fu’Darrell Pitts
Mike Law TrophyMatt Mann(for his ‘demolished wicket’ dismissal)

Mark’s speech included the usual whistle-stop tour of the season’s games and key performances, a review of the lifetime milestones reached during the year, the presentation to Darrell of a specially-embroidered shirt to celebrate his first century (in lieu of the more traditional cap, which proved impossible to source without purchasing a dozen of them) and a first ever outing for a sit-down version of ‘Pittsy Bingo’. For me two off the cuff comments represent the comedy highlights of the evening – Amy’s anguished “shush, this is my bit” which rang out clearly around a suddenly silent room and Ben’s deadpan “how come he gets a trophy for coming second” following Mark presenting Matt with the Mike Law trophy as the second ever hit wicket victim in club history.
