Badgers Cricket Club – What’s New Archive 2001

This page provides a repository of all the What’s New entries for 2001, or at least all those that I had stashed away when I separated the What’s New entries from the home page in March 2002, in reverse chronological order. If you really have a desire for the older or newer entries, then the links below will get you access to all those that I’ve saved. They are unlikely to be of any great interest, but do provide a picture of how the site has developed over the twenty-four years it has been here. Please bear in mind that links to external sites may have atrophied over time and thus you may see ‘not found’ or similar errors when trying to follow them, especially the further back in time the link was first created.

10 Nov 2001

As usual, time has flown past and I have not made good on my promise to post further details of tonight’s dinner and dance. Hopefully, all of those who were interested have received their letter from Chairman Dave, but just in case anyone pops in here today to check the times (or how much money they need to bring!?) I’ve updated the relevant entry on the news page.

The 2001 statistics that you can find on the averages page have been fully checked, so the details of the best performances, best partnerships and some of the multiple season reports for 2001 are now official. The remaining averages tables will not appear here until after the presentation of the cups at the dinner tonight, but I hope to get them posted either Sunday night or some time on Monday.

Now that I’ve got the production of the 2001 averages out of the way, I hope to spend some time on the two areas of the site that are still lacking any significant content – the Hall Of Fame and the Clubhouse – so hopefully things will have started to expand by the end of the year.

7 Oct 2001

The details of last weekend’s final game of the season, at Merrow, can be found on the season 2001 results page along with a match report, and I’ve corrected the date on the previous match at Newchapel & Horne, which I’d somehow managed to get wrong by the small matter of a week. Next official order of business will be the dinner and dance, on November 10th, about which members can expect to receive a communication from the club chairman within the next few days. Any pertinent details will also be posted here.

Mark and Dawn Gordon have begat another mini-Badger, and you can find the pertinent details on the news page. Congratulations to both the happy parents.

I’ve completed the chore of entering all the scorebook details into the database, and as a result I’ve updated some of the averages page with details of the best performances, best partnerships and some of the multiple season reports for 2001. However, these are not yet official since Darrell and I have not completed the cross-checking, and the remaining averages tables will not appear here until after the presentation of the cups at the dinner.

Once I’ve got the production of the averages report out of the way, I hope to spend some time on the two areas of the site that are still lacking any significant content – the Hall Of Fame and the Clubhouse – so hopefully things will have started to expand by the time the dinner dance comes around, and certainly by the end of the year.

29 Sep 2001

The details of last weekend’s game at Newchapel & Horne can be found on the results page along with a match report. I doubt that I’ll be able to get next week’s report up in good time, because I have to be in Bradford at 10 am. on Sunday, and won’t be back again until the end of the week. I hope to get the averages sorted out soon afterwards, but don’t expect to see the full details here until after the dinner and dance as that would give away who’s going to be getting the silverware :)

Once the season has finished and I’ve got the averages report out of the way, I hope to spend some time on the two areas of the site that are still lacking any great content – the Hall Of Fame and the Clubhouse – so hopefully things will expand by the time the dinner dance comes around, and certainly by the end of the year.

16 Sep 2001

The details of last week’s game at Rowan have been added to the results page along with a summary match report (because I didn’t actually play due to family commitments, but I did watch the last half hour or so). This week’s game against Crondall was abandoned in midweek, due to a rash of unavailability brought on by Wendy Tickner’s 50th birthday celebrations. Congratulations Wendy!?

9 Sep 2001

The details of last week’s game at Blindley Heath have been added to the results page along with a match report. The previous game was called off in advance, due to our inability to raise a side, and next week’s game against Crondall is also looking doubtful due to a rash of unavailability.

22 Aug 2001

The details of the week before last’s game at Reigate Priory have been added to the results page along with a match report. Last week’s game was called off late on Sunday morning due to the wet weather, and there is still some doubt over whether or not there will be a game this coming Sunday against Oxshott because we have so many folk unavailable to play. I was hoping to have heard definitive news from Barry, but thus far I’ve not had word.

I’ve circumvented the problem with Netscape Navigator v6 that was totally spoiling the page layout in that browser, although if you are using v6.0 there are still a couple of oddities which seem to have been fixed in v6.1 which was released recently. I’m not really happy about the change that I’ve had to make, and I still feel that NN6 is buggy in respect of laying out tables, but at least we now have HTML that renders correctly in all cases that I’m able to test.

12 Aug 2001

The details of last week’s (sadly unfinished) game at Wimbledon Village have been added to the results page along with a match report. I’ve also corrected the number of losses in the summary of results – thanks to Alan Tickner, who spotted that it didn’t add up (mea culpa) – and added a link to the Old Alleynians’ version of the match report from last week to that report. Given the state of the weather at the moment, I rather doubt that there will be a report for this week :(

Oh, and I’ve circumvented the problem with Netscape Navigator v6 that was spoiling the page layout in that browser. I’m not really happy about it, and I still feel that NN6 is buggy in respect of laying out tables, but at least we now have HTML that renders correctly in all cases that I’m able to test.

31 Jul 2001

My apologies for the fact that the site has not been updated in the past month, but I’m sure that those Badgers who were on the Oxford Tour will understand the reasons why. The long and the short of it is that I ended up in the A&E at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, and subsequently had to undergo surgery to restore my ‘good looks’. One of the side effects of my injuries was extensive bruising to the left cheek, which spread to the eyeball and has meant that for the past few weeks I have been unable to look at a computer screen for any length of time. For the full story (but thankfully no pics) read the associated news item and shudder :-o

Whilst not quite back in harness just yet, I have got hold of the scorebook, and Alan Tickner has very kindly written up some match reports for the games that I’ve missed out on. Therefore you can now find the scores from the past month on the results page along with the aforementioned (slightly edited – I just can’t resist it) match reports. Normal service should now be resumed, since I intend to attend the upcoming games even if I am unable to participate as fully as I’d like.

Oh, and BTW my apologies to anyone out there using Netscape Navigator v6 since the layout of these pages is somewhat spoiled in that browser. I’ve tried and failed to find any problem with the HTML and can only conclude, since it works fine in Internet Explorer versions from 3 to 5.5 and in various Netscape version 4 incarnations, and checks out alright in several HTML validators, that NN6 is broken in some respect.

26 Jun 2001

The Loose game has been added to the results page, along with the usual match report. Special thanks are due to Richard and Ann Kemp for entertaining the whole team at a barbecue in their back garden before the game – even the Pitts clan were able to make it for half an hour or so despite Darrell having played an under-11s match in the morning.

Since it is Tour this weekend, and I’ve no idea what state I shall be in by the time we return home – never mind the alcohol consumption, three games in three days at my age is no sinecure!! – the site may not be updated until the end of next week, although I shall probably take a day off work on the Monday and should be able to do it then.

15 Jun 2001

The game at Ockley has been added to the results page, along with a match report. Nothing else to report as I’ve been too busy at work this week to have any spare time to devote to the site.

5 Jun 2001

PLEASE NOTE that for the third week running we’ve had to reschedule, due to a double booking by West End Esher, so this weekend’s game has moved from Sunday to Saturday 9th June, from 2pm to 2.30pm, and our opponents will be Ockley, who rain prevented us from playing back at the end of April. I reckon the following link to Streetmap should get you there or thereabouts, and you can also find a little more information on the fixtures page.

Last weekend’s scores can be found on the results page, along with a match report and the completed report for the Wallington game (for those of you that read the single paragraph that I posted on Saturday). I’ve also corrected a couple of problems in the averages pages, including removing duplicate entries in some of the older partnership listings, and losing the ugly ‘0 for 0’ from those historical bowling entries where the best bowling figures are unknown.

2 Jun 2001

PLEASE NOTE that today’s game has been moved from the Old Salesians ground to Gibraltar Rec. in West Street, Ewell. All other details are unchanged.

Not much has changed since last week, other than the fact that we won our first match (take a peek at the results page) and that I’ve finally managed to get a match reports page designed and linked into the results. However, it is still incomplete as I’ve run out of time this morning and need to leave to get to today’s game!! Oh, and I’ve also corrected a couple of problems in the older partnership and batting average pages.

26 May 2001

PLEASE NOTE that tomorrow’s scheduled game against Dormansland has been cancelled and replaced with a game against Wallington IIs. It will be a two o’clock start, and the directions that I’ve been given are Hillside Gardens, off Sandy Lane South. From a brief perusal of my London atlas, I reckon the following link to Multimap should get you there.

The season got started last week, albeit three weeks later than scheduled. Take a look at the results page for the gory details, which do not bode well for the coming season. Alan Tickner had this to say on the subject:

"This is the second week where Barry and Mark have been unable to get a side out and this puts an enormous strain on them, and also on Graham who spent most of Friday and Saturday ringing around for players. We have a game every week, either Saturday or Sunday. The fixtures are on the Web, so please try to organise your weekends around cricket wherever possible. I personally turned down a ticket to the test match this week in order to play and all I have to show for it is another trip to the osteopath thanks to too much bowling!"

I think it important that we heed these words if the club is to continue to provide us all with the opportunity to play fun cricket in beautiful places with good friends.

14 May 2001

I think I’ve finally cracked an HTML problem that I’ve been struggling with ever since I started the site, so you should now find that the content portion of these pages expands to fill the width of your browser window (it was previously restricted to 620 pixel width so that it would display properly on a 640 by 480 SVGA screen). Hopefully this will make some of the tables easier to read, and also means that I don’t have to try and squeeze the averages data into too small an area (yes, the season 2000 averages really are here now). However, you may find one or two items that look a little odd because I haven’t had the time to go back and revisit some of the archived content to make sure that the layouts are not badly affected by the change.

As hinted at above, the averages page now has some genuine content, including information going all the way back to the club’s first season in 1959. Whilst writing the program code to produce the averages as HTML tables I also did some related work on the format of the results tables, and you can see the end product on the results page along with some other improvements in terms of how the pages are connected together.

Oh, and it really would be nice to get some feedback on the changes that I’ve been slaving over since the AGM. Is anybody actually reading any of this?? Does anybody care what it looks like or how it all hangs together??

11 Apr 2001

PLEASE NOTE that the times for the latter two nets sessions were originally incorrect, but you can now find the right details on the associated news item

In addition to that correction I’ve added the scores from the tenpin bowling to the news page and I’ve also extended the site for the first time in a while by adding results for the past twelve seasons (ie. all that I have in the database), to the results page and its new child pages. Let me know what you think of the layout and navigation of these pages as I’m still not sure that I’ve nailed it.

Also, added a more accurate link, and street address, for Crondall CC to the fixtures page (thanks Allan), and added links to a newly discovered Rowan CC website to both the fixtures page and the links page.

24 Mar 2001

Dave Tickner has finalised the details of the tenpin bowling – take a look at this link on the news page for the full story.

The fixtures page has been further improved, with the most accurate location descriptions that I came come up with (although there are still a handful of vague ones) plus map links to Streetmap.co.uk for all grounds. Some map pointers are more accurate than others, but most should enable those unfamiliar with a ground to find their way there. I do hope to add links to Multimap too, for those (including me!!) that prefer their format and scaling facilities, but I’ve only just discovered how to link using grid references rather than postcodes, so I used Streetmap instead.

Finally, I’ve added a handful of new cricket club directories to the links page along with the site for Windrush Valley, our Friday opponents on tour.

15 Mar 2001

Whoops. It seems that I forgot to upload the last set of changes, so the site has been static for even longer than I thought. However, the Badger has finally started to shake off its winter slumbers and with the AGM having just been and gone I thought I ought to put the effort into bringing the site up-to-date.

To that end there have been a number of changes to the news page especially the items related to the AGM and the details of who was presented with which cup at the end of season dinner dance. You can also find the fixtures for the upcoming 2001 season on the fixtures page and the post-AGM list of club officers.

Over the past few months I’ve updated the links page with a number of new club sites, including another Badgers CC, plus a link to the (relatively) new Club Cricket web site. This now incorporates the pages of the Club Cricket Conference, to which we are affiliated, and has the potential to develop into a really useful resource for the member clubs. Take a look and let them know what you think of it.

Finally, I also found time to sort out the HTML version of the fortieth anniversary document, and in the process shrunk it from over 600K to less than 100K, which ought to reduce the download time somewhat. Follow the link from the hall of fame page to see the fruit of my labours.

WARNING and PLEA: Because of the sheer quantity of changes made over the past few weeks it is quite possible that I’ve made the odd mistake. Please let me know of any errors you find, whether they be spelling, grammar, dead links or whatever. Also, if anyone knows of the exact location of Ockley Cricket Club could they please let me know so that I can improve the map link on the fixtures page.
