This page provides a repository of all the archived news items for 2008, in reverse chronological order. If you really have a desire for the older or newer entries, then the links below will get you access to all those that I’ve saved over the twenty-four and a half years that the site has been in existence.
Purley Sports Club did us proud on the food front again this year and it looked like most folk had a good time, but to be honest this year’s event felt a little flat to me. Whilst there were a number of notable absentees, it is dificult to see why that should put a crimp on proceedings for the rest of us, and I wonder whether it was simply difficult for the dinner to live up to the legacy of the fiftieth celebration, even though they were very different affairs. For the record, the various bits of silverware found their way to:
Batting | Pat Redding | 482 runs @ 68.9 |
Bowling | Graham Ward | 28 wickets @ 15.5 |
Fielding | Mark Gordon | 15 catches |
Fantasy Points | Steve Pitts | (for finishing fourth – seems a bit daft to me) |
Captains | Simon Fox | (thoroughly deserved for all that work on the 50th Foxy) |
Frank Butt | Matt Mann | |
‘Wang Fu’ | Richard Ward | (originally wrongly attributed here to Rakesh) |
‘Yorkie’ Award | Ben Valentine |
There were a fair number of notable events this season. There was the small matter of the club reaching the end of its fiftieth season in existence during which the team passed four hundred wins, Pat scored the club’s first ever 99 whilst streaking past three thousand runs at a faster pace than anyone in club history, Graham and Richard Ward both reached the thousand run plateau (whilst Graham Davenport left us dangling over his passage to that milestone) and Steve Pitts reached 300 wicket keeper dismissals. On the individual front both Matthew Mann and Graham Ward recorded personal bests with the bat and Graham also rolled up his best ever bowling figures, reflecting the fact that his enthusiasm is reaping its rewards on the field as well as in his match reports.

The annual presentation dinner and dance will take place on Saturday 8th November at Purley Sports Club between Wallington and Purley, and the evening will start with drinks at 18:30. This will be our second visit to the club, where Graham Davenport is a member, and the cost per head will be £25. As last year the meal will be a buffet and carvery and carriages will be at midnight.
All interested parties should have received an email (or letter) from Simon Fox, with full details of the evening and a demand for money with menaces, but if you haven’t then Simon’s contact details can be found on the club officers page.
I have added the exact location of the Sports Club to the Google Map showing the grounds we play on and you can obtain slightly less accurate indications of the location using this postcode-based link to a map of the area in Multimap or this slightly more accurate one using Streetmap.

Full details have been moved to a separate fiftieth anniversary page.
