Badgers Cricket Club – Forty Summers Long

Please bear in mind that this is an historical document, whose contents are now twenty-six years out of date, but I have added links to the current versions of the same or similar information elsewhere on the site. In many respects this document was the trigger for the whole web site (I first mooted the idea at the 1998 AGM, and eventually used the tables herein as a starting point when I decided to just go ahead and present the burgeoning site as a fait accompli at the 2000 AGM) and as such I intend to leave it here as an historical relic.

Forty Summers Long – 1959 to 1998

Compiler’s Ramble

I’ve been promising the lifetime (or career, if you will) averages for pretty much the whole of the 1990s, and yet have never quite found the time to knuckle under and actually do the work, both programming and organising, to make it happen. Well, this fortieth anniversary has focused the mind wonderfully, even if the necessary quantities of spare time still didn’t really manifest themselves. Thanks to taking a day a week off work since the season finished, and equally thanks to the patience and forbearance of Janet, I made just enough free time to get this document put together.

It is by no means the be-all and end-all of such documents – I would have liked to include head-to-head records against long-time opponents, notable collapses, some records related to highest and lowest team and match scores and more information on catches, wicket-keeper dismissals and games played by each person (as opposed to innings) – but I hope that there is enough information here to make it a worthwhile picture of the past forty seasons. Frustratingly, I have all the necessary information collected and recorded for the past eleven seasons, but even to put together what we have here meant several days of doing little more than poring over the old scorebooks and end of season averages.

A few words of warning about some of the figures contained herein. Prior to 1988 the data is based purely and simply on the figures produced by hand by a number of stalwart volunteers, and then typed up by other equally stalwart helpers. Given the amount of data that then had to be input into the computer by my own hand, there was an awful lot of room for error, and I would be astonished if the odd mistake or two didn’t get introduced here and there along the way. There is also the issue of the 1981 scorebook, which has gone missing altogether, and on that basis I know that the batting figures for James Chignell and the bowling numbers for Brent Noble and Chris Preston are definitely missing one or more performances.

Anyway, enough of that anal retentive nonsense, although whilst on the subject of checking data entry, I’d like to thank both Janet and Darrell for the effort they put in to help me crosscheck the figures with the scorebooks. It is a boring and thankless task, but one that is almost impossible to do properly without assistance, and I’m mighty grateful to have such willing and competent help!

Finally, I hope you all enjoy this document and that it brings back a few memories. Here’s hoping that by the time the fiftieth anniversary rolls around I will finally have got my act together and pulled together all the other information I’d like to see make up a complete record of the history of the club.

Propeller Head’s Corner:

For those of you interested in such things this document, and the 1997 and 1998 season analyses created at the same time, were put together on a pair of IBM-compatible PCs, one running Windows 98 and the other OS/2, and an Apple Mac, with output produced via a Panasonic KXP1124, an HP Laserjet 6P and a Tektronix Phaser 550. Data was input, manipulated and reported on using Superbase for Windows v2, text creation and editing done in Kedit for Windows v1.5 and Word 97, some data manipulation and formatting in Excel 97, and graphics scanned using Adobe Photoshop v5 and printed using Kodak’s Imaging For Windows.

Best Individual Batting Performances

Here in all their splendour are the best batting performances of the past forty years. Rather than limit this list to just those scores over 100, I’ve chosen to show all scores over 90. An asterisk against a score indicates that the innings was a not out.

Best Individual Bowling Performances

Here are the equally splendid top bowling performances of the past forty years, which as you’d expect are rather dominated by one particularly fine individual. This time I’ve limited the selection to seven wickets or better, which works out rather nicely as there are only two more entries on this list than there are on the batting side.

Other Significant Individual Records

This is a list of the best (or worst!) five individual performances in particular season and lifetime statistical categories. I have not included lifetime batting and bowling averages here, since the earlier tables were sorted on that basis, nor highest scores, since they too were covered earlier

One amazing stat to note (under ‘Runs Scored (Lifetime)’ below) is that after thirty years of playing together for the Badgers, the Tickner brothers are separated by just 25 runs!

In these tables ‘Economy’ is the number of runs allowed per over bowled, whilst ‘Strike Rate’ is the number of wickets taken per 100 balls bowled.

[The current version of the individual leaders can be found elsewhere in the Honours Board.]

Club Officers

This section lists all those members that have served the club in some official capacity or other. Without such willing volunteers a club like the Badgers could not function, and I for one feel a debt of gratitude to every one of them, although sadly not all are still alive to accept such plaudits.

If anyone knows who was vice-captain during the 1969 season then I’d be grateful if they’d let me know as I’ve been quite unable to track down the information from the usual sources.

[The current list of club officers, including who was vice-captain in 1969, can be found elsewhere in the Honours Board.]

Cup Winners

These tables list the winners of each of the cups awarded by the club over the years. The Batting and Bowling Cups are awarded to the players who top the respective averages for the season. The Captain’s Cup, which is given by the club captain to the person, or persons, that he feels has made the greatest contribution to the club over the course of the previous year or more, was first awarded in 1961.

The Fielding Cup, which actually is given to the player who snares the most catches (other than behind the stumps) during the season, was first awarded in 1964, whilst the first Single Wicket competition was held in 1965. The running of the single wicket has become very erratic in recent times, so the gaps are as a result of the competition not being held rather than any loss of memory or poor records.

The Frank Butt Cup is given for performance in relation to ability, sometimes by popular vote and more recently by consensus between the captain and vice-captain, and was first awarded in 1976. The Mike Law Trophy is presented to the player voted ‘man of the match’ at the President’s XI game, and is therefore not restricted to club members. It was first awarded in 1984, but there are several gaps in recent times as we have struggled to find a suitable venue for such a match since Seeboard closed their ground at Burford Bridge. ‘Wang Fu’ is awarded for some notable feat achieved during the tour weekend, whether on or off the field, and is also therefore not limited to club members, or even cricketers! It was first presented in 1990, and since your esteemed compiler and captain was not present on tour this year I am not involved in making the award, so can’t yet tell you who has won it.
